This week’s Sidebar is a special announcement of a new and important initiative for the 2020 Election:

OAJ Votes Count. OAJ Votes Matter.

Register to vote. Request an absentee ballot. Meet the candidates. Encourage others to register. Help at the polls.

Just like Ohio’s civil justice system, elections help our country, state, and communities resolve differences thoughtfully and respectfully. Just as OAJ Members participate in and support the civil justice system, we must also participate in and support elections.

OAJ Votes is a new initiative to provide a centralized resource of tools for members to participate in the upcoming election. There will be easy access to voter registration and address updating forms, directions and forms for requesting an absentee ballot, and lists of state legislative campaigns. Additionally, OAJ Votes will help members sign up to earn CLEs for working the election polls in your communities.

Visit for these resources and to get involved.

Tolling Deadline

The HB 197 tolling deadline is today, July 30. As of tomorrow, no newly expiring SOLs or judicial deadlines will be statutorily tolled. For more information, please check out OAJ’s COVID-19 Resources webpage for additional research and supporting documents.

Immunity Update

While the legislature has been on summer break and in significant turmoil, the debate on civil immunity has not clarified. Governor Mike DeWine recently signed a letter with other, mostly Republican, governors requesting U.S. Congress approve civil immunity for health care workers, businesses, and schools.

Governor DeWine also requested the Ohio General Assembly quickly pass civil immunity legislation like HB 606To do so, the House must meet and vote to concur with the changes made by the Senate. If the House votes against concurrence, the bill will be sent to a conference committee to work out a final bill. Brad Ingraham will update membership as soon as these legislative processes continue.

CLEs for Poll Working

The Ohio Supreme Court recently approved a plan to allow attorneys to earn up to 4 hours of CLEs for volunteering to work the polls on election day. Due to the pandemic, county Board of Elections may be facing a shortage of poll workers, possibly resulting in fewer, less convenient voting locations and long lines at the polls.

Attorneys like you have the opportunity to support democracy and earn CLEs.  Sign up at your local county board of elections office or sign up online with the Ohio Secretary of State:

The OAJ will be providing members with more information about voting, working the polls, and meeting candidates. Stay tuned.
